The Lepine Mountains
The peculiar shape of the Lepine mountainsand the geological nature of its rocks, combined with the proximity of the sea, have created a wide variety of micro climates that result in an equally varied and rich vegetation in this part of Lazio. These mountains are an important example, unique in Central Italy, of karst, a geological phenomenon typical of the north-eastern regions of the country
The Lepine area however, is not just about nature but also about culture, history and tradition.
In the towns that are part of the district, amongst narrow streets inhabited by hospitable people you will come across churches, castles and monuments that capture and captivate. Several villages are dominated by palaces that were once those of princes and barons: the castle of Sermoneta is the most eloquent example of its kind but also the edifices of the historic centre of Artena (the largest pedestrian only town centre in Europe) and of Carpineto Romano, the baronial palace in Maenza, and in Roccasecca dei Volsci, the castle of Priverno and the other homes from the past that are worth visiting. Some of the villages cradled early man in his infancy. Therefore, for this reason the many prehistoric remains kept in various museums must be visited as well as the Antica Norba wall, or the wall at Sezze or Artena and the rest of the Roman buildings that are dispersed around the countryside.
Scholars of the Grand Tour who in centuries past filled the streets of Italy in search of signs of ancient civilization, have left their descriptions and sketches (preserved in various museums in Europe) that recall their amazement when confronted with such beauty.
The Lepine was also the earth of Saints, Popes and Cardinals. The beautiful churches, filled with works of art, are the most eloquent sign of their presence.
Colleferro, developing city
A few kilometres from Segni, stands Colleferro. A modern and dynamic developing city (as we call the urban centres that are not born spontaneously, but based on a complete urban design and usually made at short notice) was established formally in 1935. A city with a great and prestigious industrial tradition (here find products such as explosives for civilian and military uses, cement, yarn for socks, nylon, wagons and phosphate fertilizers, missile components) today it is also the epicentre of the wide range of services on offer for the entire area.
Anagni, the city of the Popes
Known as the city of the Popes, for being the birthplace of several popes, and for having been for a long time the Papal residence, its name is linked in particular to the events of Pope Boniface VIII and the episode known as the slap of Anagni. In the medieval centre, made up of elegant and austere buildings, of Romanesque churches, steeples, loggias and piazzas with simple and minimal architecture, the thirteenth-century palace of Boniface VIII is of great interest as well as the town hall, and Barnekow Home many churches, among them the Cathedral which with its splendid crypt whose frescoes make it one of the most interesting of the thirteenth century cycle of paintings.
Fiuggi and the Thermal Baths
Fiuggi is one of the largest spas in Europe, with the old town perched on the hill and a modern spa centre which extends downstream in the green of the chestnut woods. It annually hosts important events as well as national and international conferences. Fiuggi is rich in sports facilities amongst them an 18 hole golf course, one of the first to open to the public in Italy.
Carpineto Romano and the Rerum Novarum
Surrounded by the forests of the Lepine mountains this town offers one of the most interesting and charming old towns of the district and is particularly known for being the birthplace of Pope Leo XIII, the Pope of the social encyclical Rerum Novarum. In addition to the birthplace of the pope (Palazzo Pecci), you can visit many churches and noble palaces, the Municipal Museum, "La Reggia dei Volsci" and the permanent exhibition of Leo XIII's relics.
Tivoli
The town of Tivoli and the surrounding area located along the river Aniene at the great waterfall has enjoyed particularly favourable conditions since ancient times. The abundance of water favoured the construction of large architectural complexes over different eras. The most remarkable examples are: the extremely famous Villa Adriana from the Roman era, the sixteenth century Villa d'Este, Villa Gregoriana.
This particularly prestigious city of art has monuments declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
Valmontone, outlet and amusement park
Rainbow Magicland is the name of the large amusement theme park which is currently being built in the Valmontone (Roma) area very close to Fashion District Valmontone Outlet.
Rainbow Magicland (which should be opened in spring 2011) will cover more than 600,000 square metres and will be divided into 6 themed areas, fantastical worlds that will take the visitor on a journey to discover the magic of entertainment and adventure: a jump across dimensions into enchanted castles, with courageous Vikings, magical fairies, powerful witches and brave adventurers.
In Segni's immediate vicinity just a few minutes away there are other places that are definitely worth a visit: Gavignano (where you can visit the palace where Innocenzo III was born), Montelanico (medieval hamlet that has been magnificently preserved), Gorga (small picturesque inhabited centre immersed in the most lush woods in the area), Paliano (formerly a fiefdom of the Colonna family, an interesting town guarded by an ancient wall), Piglio (main stop on the Cesanese wine road), Rocca Massima (the first tasty stop off, thanks to its cured hams on the way to the Pontina plains) and then the fresh water spring Fonte Meo with excellent low mineral content water, which was already opened at the beginning of the 1900s.
