Giostra del Maialetto (Jousting the Pig)

The origins of this curious event (later celebrated with the establishment of a fancy dress event) go back to the early '600 when the counts Sforza, Duke of Segni, clashed with the people over the tax imposed on "grazing" pigs in the woods.
At the event, a pig with a bell around his neck was left free in the ancient Roman cistern in the archaeological area of the Acropolis. Five teams, one for each area of the town, composed of two men each, battle to "hunt" the lively pig. All participants were blindfolded, and wore bells on their legs to fool each other with the noise while brandishing harmless sorghum brooms in order to hit the animal. The team with the highest number of landed shots scored. But the real fun for the audience was in watching the players blindly hit each other.

The event was ended in 1992 due to protests by animal rights activists it was then brought back recently but with a man dressed up playing the part of the pig.
